Making Important Decisions

Making Important Decisions

A health care setting today is similar to any other institution and organizational structure considering decision-making and human resource management. It owes to the fact that healthcare facilities have finance departments like any other business organizations. There are therefore critical decisions that the management has to make in daily activities of the organization, which fundamentally concern proper strategic planning and procedures for the efficient and quality delivery of services to the public. Change is equally a critical element in a health care setting. As a matter of fact, today, most challenging cases that physicians encounter in their profession have evolved as compared to patients’ reports decades back, and therefore, the need for change is important. Some of the areas in healthcare where change is inevitable include treatment and therapy procedures among other clinical processes. Decision-making is more relevant from the three elements in an organization because it helps to determine if there is a need for change or not, identify a specific organizational issue and to plan methods of change implementation.

The respective management, administration and the personnel have to combine the three elements to be able to achieve set goals in the medical institution. Consequently, the organization should make timely and efficient decisions. However, it has proven to be a challenge for many administrations in the industry. The question of which approach to take towards the development and improvement of services in a healthcare institution is not easy to solve. The main dilemma is whether to focus on change that will lead to strategic planning or on strategic planning, which will eventually result in change.

Before the implementation of any significant change or improvement in an organization, extensive research needs to be done by the relevant personnel who should pay attention to details, as well as analyze the need and results of the implementation course. Decision-making is a procedural element in the formulation of policies before strategic planning. Hence, the latter comes after critical decision-making when the management of a health care facility is certain of a particular course of action focusing on a specific element of change. Just like in a business organization with a decentralized system of administration, in a health care setting, consultations and opinions of departmental managers are taken into consideration before making a crucial decision. Although this process may take a longer time as compared to centralized regimes, it is extensive fostering practical decision-making that leads to the achievement of organizational goals.

The evaluation of performance and the satisfaction of consumers or patients in this case come first. Results of the analysis help determine whether there is a need for change in the system and the structure of service delivery or only its improvement. In most instances, change is necessary when improving services in an organization comes as a definitive course of action. Therefore, the management has to make a decision and specify a particular health department that requires change before planning. Setting up appropriate strategies towards improving the system and achieving the set goals of development is the key step in guaranteeing the success of the healthcare institution. The three elements, namely, decision-making, change and strategic planning, work together to guarantee success of an organization, since each of them cannot be self-sufficient on its own. An example of the time factor in a health care institution is the situation when patients raise concerns of waiting too long before being attended to by a physician. Seeking a solution for the matter requires a plan and critical decision on work schedules and whether to employ other doctors or not in meeting the public need.

In conclusion, the management of an organization requires a combination of all elements in the frequent evaluation of finance and human resource needs but with greater emphasis on proper decision-making approaches. Results of these analysis procedures form a basis of the most relevant decision that will guarantee proper development, as well as appropriate future changes aimed at improving services in a sustainable manner.
